What is a Forum?
A forum is a gathering of Citizen Councilors during a open round of participation, when Citizen Councilors can submit surveys to the King County Council. Forum Rounds generally occur 2 to 3 times per year, last 6 weeks, and are focused on a topic the Council is managing.
In-Person Forums
Forums occur in-person, during an event where a host has people over to their home or at a public place, like a library. At an in-person forum, a host organizes the event, everybody watches the topic video and reviews the topic information and people have the opportunity to talk about their values and beliefs. During in-person discussions, everybody gets to say what they want without any interruptions and then there is time for open discussion before everyone takes the paper survey.
Online Forums
Forums also exist online, when Citizen Councilors leave comments or respond to comments on a web page, and we summarize those discussions in the online Forum page. For specific discussion topics, we also have an in-depth discussion page for people within groups to coordinate logistics for meetings, or for people to have more detailed conversations.
An Internet forum is a discussion area on a website. Website members can post discussions and read and respond to posts by other forum members. An Internet forum can be focused on nearly any subject and a sense of an online community, or virtual community, tends to develop among forum members.
An Internet forum is also called a message board, discussion group, bulletin board or web forum. However, it differs from a blog, the name for a web log, as a blog is usually written by one user and usually only allows for the responses of others to the blog material. An Internet forum usually allows all members to make posts and start new topics.
An Internet forum is also different from a chat room. Members in a chat room usually all chat or communicate at the same time, while members in an Internet forum post messages to be read by others whenever they happen to log on. Internet forums also tend to be more topic-focused than chat rooms.

What is a forum, thread, etc?

in
A forum is an online site created for the purpose of allowing discussion. The CMLP forums are a place for users to discuss legal and non-legal matters related to citizen media. Forum users can interact by posting questions, answers, and other comments related to a given topic.
A thread is a grouping of posts set-up as a conversation among users.
What is a public forum?
A public forum is a place that has, by tradition or practice, been held out for general use by the public for speech-related purposes.
To determine which of the standards of student expression applies in a given case, many courts first conduct a "public forum analysis." The public forum analysis determines whether individuals may have access to places for communicative purposes.1
There are three types of public forums:
I. A "traditional", or "open, public forum" is a place with a long tradition of freedom of expression, such as a public park or a street corner. The government can normally impose only *******-neutral time, place, and manner restrictions on speech in a public forum. Restrictions on speech in a public forum that are based on ******* will be struck down, unless the government can show the restriction is necessary to further a compelling governmental interest.
II. A "limited public forum" or "designated public forum" is a place with a more limited history of expressive activity, usually only for certain groups or topics. Examples of a limited public forum would include a university meeting hall or a city-owned theater. The government can limit access to certain types of speakers in a limited public forum, or limit the use of such facilities for certain subjects. Despite these more pro******ive guidelines, however, a governmental institution may still not restrict expression at a limited forum unless that restriction serves a "compelling interest."
III. A "closed public forum" is a place that, traditionally, has not been open to public expression, such as a jail or a military base. Governmental restrictions on access to a nonpublic forum will be upheld as long as they are reasonable and not based on a desire to suppress a particular viewpoint. This standard is far more deferential to government officials.
With regard to public schools, the Supreme Court elaborated on the public forum doctrine in cases involving the use of teacher mailboxes, Perry Education Association v. Perry Local Educators’ Association,2 and student newspapers, Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier.3
In Perry, the Court determined that in-school teacher mailboxes were not public forums, and that the school district could allow the official teacher union sole access to the mailboxes, even if it meant excluding a rival teacher union. "Implicit in the concept of the nonpublic forum is the right to make distinctions in access on the basis of subject matter and speaker identity," the Court wrote.4
The Court went on to say that the deferential access provided to the official teachers' union was a reasonable way to "prevent the District's schools from becoming a battlefield for inter-union squabbles."5
In Hazelwood, the Supreme Court determined that a high school newspaper produced as part of a journalism class was not a public forum. Citing Perry, the Court wrote: "Hence, school facilities may be deemed to be public forums only if school authorities have 'by policy or practice' opened those facilities for 'indiscriminate use by the general public,' or by some segment of the public, such as student organizations."6 The majority in Hazelwood also reasoned that because the production of the newspaper was "part of the educational curriculum and a regular classroom activity," it was a nonpublic forum.
Since the Hazelwood decision, many courts have continued to defer to the judgment of school officials. As a result, many forms of censorship that had previously been unacceptable under the Tinker standard of expression have been upheld

Internet Communities And Forums

Ethan Feerst and Dylan Stewart (Technology Therapist, Mac Guru) gives expert video advice on: How can I meet new people on the Internet?; How do I join an Internet community? and more...
What is an "Internet forum"?

An Internet forum is a place on the Internet for trading ideas or information. An Internet forum allows many people to chime in about their particular experiences, information, tips, tricks, etc. There are many computer forums out there which, if you have a problem with your computer, you can look up that problem and you might find 5 or 1 people who have been talking about that exact problem and how they are trying to solve it and potential solutions. A forum is an online communication between multiple users, generally through ****-style communication – occasionally through voice. Internet forums really began as an off-shoot of the neighborhood bulletin board, where you would go and post your want ads or what you needed or maybe, try and get some business – basic places where communities would come together and find information about various topics. When the Internet came around, it made it much easier for people to find specific forums, specific bulletin board sites. Some of the popular ones, like Craigslist, enable you the ability to find anything you want, sell or buy things, hire people, find a job yourself, find a roommate, etc. It's a place for Internet correspondence and communication. It's a way for multiple users to give their tips, tricks, and information about how they're using something or what they've found in their day-to-day experiences. It's a way for information to be gathered and collected by every basic user about specific topics.
What is an "Internet community"?

An internet community is a group of people who meet or have their communication through the internet. This takes many shapes and forms: this could be a forum, where people are getting together to answer questions on the latest problem they're having with their computer, or what they thought of the last episode of Grey's Anatomy. An internet community springs up out of multiple people having one common purpose. Some of the internet communities that have happened recently include such amazing technological developments as game systems, where hundreds of thousands of people can log on simultaneously to play one game on this multiplayer universe on the internet, where you're interacting as a character in this game with your friends across the street and friends around the world. An internet community breaks down geographical locations. It prevents distance from being an issue when you want to communicate with like-minded people on like-minded topics.
The Educational Forum is a doubly masked peer-reviewed journal published quarterly to provide thought-provoking, challenging essays, research reports, and featured works designed to stimulate dialogue in education on a worldwide scale.
Group learning can create a favorable atmosphere for the students to develop their imagination and creativity. In my class, I often divide the students into several groups and ask them to accomplish some tasks through cooperative learning. Since the students can have a relatively private discussion with their group members, they will feel free to practise their oral English. They can not only help each other to improve incorrect pronunciation or to rectify grammatical mistakes but also draw on collective wisdom and absorb all the useful ideas. Therefore, the completion of the task is facilitated and the students’ English learning efficiency is greatly promoted through group learning. During group work, the students can acquire some new knowledge through totally free divergent thinking; thus their independent thinking ability, imagination and creativity can get into full play. In addition, when the students finish the tasks assigned by the teacher, they will have a sense of accomplishment and will surely experience the great pleasure of success.
